Twyford International launched a project in Mkuranga District, Coastal Province, Tanzania, to establish a 600 t/d float glass production line with an annual output of 220,000 tons. Prior to this project, Tanzania lacked large-scale local production of high-quality float glass, relying heavily on imports. The challenge was to create a modern facility capable of meeting domestic demand while also supporting regional exports across Africa and the Middle East.
With the trust and support of all stakeholders, we supplied the project’s complete hot-end equipment and electrical systems, including ladle transfer cars, horizontal stirrers, tin bath ladle cars, dross boxes with lift-out rollers, annealing lehrs, and roller conveyors. This full equipment package enabled the plant to be built to international standards while ensuring production reliability. On September 11, 2024, the float glass production line was successfully commissioned and entered stable operation, producing high-quality white glass and coated colored glass products.
The new float glass facility filled a long-standing gap in Tanzania’s local glass manufacturing industry. It now serves domestic demand while exporting 85% of its output to markets across East Africa, Southern Africa, North Africa, and the Middle East, reinforcing Tanzania’s position as a regional hub for glass production. The project demonstrates how tailored equipment solutions can combine local industrial development with international competitiveness.
